 Burns Night Luncheon

ROTARIANS DOING ROTARY THINGS !

It’s been a busy week for The Rotary Club of Epping.

Members have been playing Scrabble and Tenpin bowling as part of the annual district sports tournament .

Christine has represented Rotary at a dinner in Epping held by members of The Epping Foodbank team and also had a wonderful afternoon with Voluntary Action Epping Forest – ACE Activities.

As an active fund raiser during her time as Mayor of Epping  and through Rotary,  she was invited to a Burns Night luncheon on Wednesday along with the current Mayor, Cherry McCredie and her husband John.

Also from Rotary, Trevor Johnson , as Chairman of Trustees of Grange Farm led the proceedings ( and the singing).

Tables were decorated with tartan runners and napkins and the room decorated with various Scottish artifacts – including pictures of Nessie herself!

The haggis was piped in and the traditional meal  of haggis, neeps and tatties, followed by cranachan, shortbread, honey cake, and flapjacks which was cooked and served by the folks who attend ACE Activities and who all benefit from the care, leadership, and friendship from the brilliant volunteers.

It is wonderful to be part of this amazing group!

Rotary has supported VAEF for a long time and hopefully will continue to do so in the future.

The Magic of Rotary Shines at St. John’s Christmas Tree Festival 2024

The playground at Ivy Chimneys School was filled with excitement and cheer on the 10th of December, as Santa made a grand entrance on his motorised sleigh. Greeted by enthusiastic children jumping up and down with joy, Santa managed to complete four full circuits of the playground, much to everyone’s delight.

After his festive laps, Santa joined the school year groups in the assembly hall for a lively and heartwarming Q&A session. As always, the children eagerly responded to Santa’s classic questions:

  1. “Are you pleased to see me?” (Cue Santa’s cheeky, “Sorry, I can’t hear you…!”)
  2. “Have you sent your Christmas present list to Santa yet?”
  3. “Have you been good this year?”

The interactions were completely unscripted, making for plenty of laughter and unforgettable moments.

A fantastic time was had by one and all, leaving everyone in high spirits for the festive season.

Yours in Rotary Service,
Epping Rotary Club

Santa Visit at Ivy Chimneys 10th Dec

The Magic of Rotary Shines at St. John’s Christmas Tree Festival 2024

This year, the Epping Rotary Club proudly participated in the annual St. John’s Christmas Tree Festival, bringing a touch of magic to the festive celebrations with our decorated tree.

The theme for our tree was “The Magic of Rotary”, and it beautifully captured the spirit of service, community, and collaboration that defines our club. Despite being a last-minute task, our incoming corporate members from Aves, Isobel Scrafton and Johanna Koivistoi, stepped up to the challenge with creativity and enthusiasm.

Their efforts resulted in a stunning and heartfelt display that symbolizes the Rotary’s commitment to making a difference while spreading joy and goodwill during this festive season.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Isobel and Johanna for their dedication and ingenuity in bringing our vision to life. Their work highlights the value of teamwork and the shared passion for service that all Rotarians hold dear.

Be sure to visit the St. John’s Christmas Tree Festival to see “The Magic of Rotary” tree and many other wonderful displays. It’s a perfect way to celebrate the season and support our local community.

From all of us at the Epping Rotary Club, we wish you a joyful and magical Christmas!

Rotary members & Epping in Bloom Crocus Planting 2024

Rotary Club of Epping members, Epping In Bloom members and Residents of Theydon Grove. The Location was Theydon Grove.

On a crisp, sunny day in Theydon Grove, the Epping Rotary Club, Epping In Bloom, and local residents came together for an inspiring day of community action and gardening. This collaboration not only aimed to beautify the area but also to foster a deeper sense of community, a goal close to the hearts of all involved.

Epping Rotary and Epping In Bloom Join Forces

The Epping Rotary Club, known for its dedication to community service, partnered with Epping In Bloom to bring a burst of color to Theydon Grove. Members of both organizations, joined by enthusiastic local residents, gathered their gardening tools and set to work planting, weeding, and tidying up the communal spaces. Epping In Bloom, an organization dedicated to enhancing the area’s green spaces, shared their expertise, providing beautiful seasonal plants and hands-on guidance.

Resident Involvement: A Strong Community Connection

The residents of Theydon Grove didn’t just watch from the sidelines—they rolled up their sleeves and got involved. From planting flowers to spreading mulch, they played an active role in transforming their neighborhood. This hands-on approach made the day not only productive but also a wonderful opportunity for residents to meet, connect, and share a common purpose.

The Impact: More Than Just Flowers

Beyond the physical beauty that now brightens Theydon Grove, the day left a lasting impact. By working together, residents and community organizations strengthened ties and built new friendships. The newly planted greenery and vibrant blooms are a daily reminder of what can be achieved when people come together with a shared goal.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Theydon Grove

As the plants grow and flourish, so will the connections made on this day. The Epping Rotary Club and Epping In Bloom plan to make this an ongoing project, ensuring that Theydon Grove continues to thrive as a beautiful and welcoming environment. For all involved, this is just the beginning of an ongoing commitment to the community.

Thank You to All Who Participated

A huge thank you to the members of Epping Rotary, Epping In Bloom, and every Theydon Grove resident who participated. This project wouldn’t have been possible without your hard work, generosity, and dedication. We look forward to more opportunities to work together and continue making a positive impact in our community.

Dear Noel,

Re: Epping Rotary Donation to Equal Ability Radio

I am writing to extend my deepest thanks and appreciation for the very kind and generous donation to our charity, Equal Ability Radio.

It was a lovely unexpected surprise and a huge lift for us following my, most enjoyable, but less productive attendance to the Eastbourne Conference.

Rotary Epping have been extremely supportive in my efforts to build our broadcast platform and our growth has definitely been strengthened by your backing.

Listener numbers, and reach are growing all the time, as is our team, it really is gratifying to look back and see how far we have come.

We can’t provide our radio station service, support the interests of the disabled or disadvantaged, without funding so, once again, my deepest thanks for getting behind us and helping to keep us on track.

If we can ever help you in return by way of appreciation, please just ask.

Very best wishes

Trevor

Our speaker was our newest corporate member from Aves, Jo who gave a very interesting talk on how she was born in Sweden and came to London to study and has lived here since 1996.  She is a Senior Optical Consultant at Aves. Her interests are History and Children’s Theatre.  She explained that she would be working with the public image committee with responsibility for Social Media.  Her plan is to use Instagram and put out two posts each week, and to do this, Jo needs members to send pictures of activities past and present with a few words describing the activity. Her email is [email protected]   Keith has already sent one of Ten pin bowling on Sunday.

Graham Hayden, Christine, Trevor, Barbara, and Keith took part in the District Ten Pin Bowling competition on Sunday. A very enjoyable morning but I think the expression is ‘could do better’

Trevor will be hosting the District dominoes competition

Trevor reported that he had attended the Rotary Club of Putney Centenary Dinner and had the pleasure of sitting next to President Habib Saba from the RC of Beirut Cosmopolitan.  We were reminded of the Explosion in Port of Beirut in 2020 and Trevor explained how Habib Saba and President Louise Mc/Cance -Price from RC of Putney had worked tirelessly on a UK/Beirut disaster appeal during Covid and had globally raised over $400k for two pediatric wards and to re-equip their pediatric and neonatal surgical theatre. This included the largest global grant from our district 1130.  Over 150 Rotary clubs were involved (116 in the UK) .  This demonstrates how clubs working together can make a real difference.

KidsOut Day with Rotary Club of Epping

On June 23rd, the Rotary Club of Epping brought smiles and laughter to ten children from Alderton Junior School, Loughton, with an unforgettable KidsOut day out. These children, who are SEND (Special Education Needs & Disabilities) pupils, enjoyed a day filled with fun and adventure, thanks to the meticulous planning and heartfelt effort of many dedicated individuals.

Lianne Adams, the lead teacher, played a pivotal role in ensuring the day was a success. Alongside her, a group of supportive parents and carers were on hand, contributing their time and energy to make sure everything ran smoothly. Their dedication was evident in every detail, creating an environment where the children felt safe, supported, and ready to enjoy all the activities.

The weather couldn’t have been better. With clear skies and warm sunshine, it was the perfect backdrop for a day of outdoor fun. The children engaged in various activities, from playful games to explorative adventures, all designed to cater to their unique needs and abilities. The laughter was contagious, and the smiles were endless.

This special day out was more than just an event; it was a testament to the power of community and the impact of thoughtful organization. The Rotary Club of Epping, with their commitment to service and community support, once again demonstrated how small acts of kindness can create lasting memories.

As the day came to a close, it was clear that everyone had a fantastic time. The children returned home with new stories to share and cherished memories to hold onto. For the parents, carers, and organizers, the success of the day was a rewarding reminder of the joy that comes from giving back.

Thank you to everyone who made this day possible, especially the Rotary Club of Epping, Lianne Adams, and the dedicated parents and carers. Here’s to more days filled with sunshine, laughter, and community spirit!

Chess for all at Stonards Hill!

A Brand New Chess Set for a New Age

The Rotary Club of Epping, Essex, has been hard at work improving local recreational spaces, and we’re excited to share our latest project with you. Thanks to the support of our community, we’ve raised funds for a new chess table at Stonards Hill recreation grounds, adding a unique and engaging feature for residents of all ages to enjoy.

Inspired by the recent resurgence of interest in chess, exemplified by the popularity of “The Queen’s Gambit,” we saw an opportunity to bring people together through this classic game. Chess isn’t just about strategy; it’s a mentally stimulating activity that’s accessible to everyone, regardless of age or experience level.

Join us 17 May at 4pm

After successful fundraising efforts, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of the chess table on 17 May at 4 pm. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a complete novice, we invite you to join us for an afternoon of friendly games and community bonding.

We’re grateful for the support of local residents, chess enthusiasts, and Friends of Rotary who made this project possible. Together, we’re creating inclusive spaces where people can connect, have fun, and enjoy the outdoors.

So, mark your calendars and come join us on 17 May as we celebrate the newest addition to Stonards Hill. Let’s make some moves and enjoy the benefits of community engagement and outdoor play.

World Rotary Day 2024 Celebration

Friday 23rd February is World Rotary Day 2024, and we are celebrating 119 years of Rotary, an institution of individuals united throughout the world to provide humanitarian assistance, transforming peoples lives and bringing people together to make a difference to our communities.

Rotary is working with the World Health organization to eradicate Polio. Thousands of purple crocuses have been planted by Epping Rotary throughout the Town as a symbol of Rotary’s efforts to end polio.

23rd February is a day of celebration for Rotary but it also marks two years of war in Ukraine. Epping Rotary provides support to Ukraine and other disasters through donations to Shelter Box, one of our global partners that provide emergency shelter and other items to families who have lost their homes.

Epping Rotary members are focused on making a difference, by working with charitable organisations to create Hope in the World and serving their community by supporting local charities and organisations such as St. Clare’s Hospice, Age Concern and St. John’s School to name but a few.

If you would like to know more about Rotary and how you can be involved either as a member or as a Friend of Rotary, please get in touch.

Epping Rotary's Donation to Haven House Children's Hospice

As members of Epping Rotary, we take immense pride in the charitable efforts orchestrated by our President, Barbara Scruton. Together, we recently facilitated the transfer of a generous donation, amounting to £3,000.00, symbolizing our commitment to supporting Haven House Children’s Hospice.

In a heartfelt gesture, Barbara Scruton personally handed over the cheque to Barbara Jacobs, a dedicated volunteer at the hospice. This collaborative initiative highlights our shared values and the collective impact we aim to make in the lives of those in need.

As a Rotary community, we remain steadfast in our mission to contribute positively to the well-being of our broader society, fostering a spirit of compassion and generosity within Epping and beyond.
